Careof is a non-profit organization for contemporary art. Founded in 1987, it fosters creativity and artistic experimentation in all its forms and expressions. It is a place of inspiration and comparison for young artists and encourages research through exhibitions, screenings, workshops, lectures and hybrid projects, through the exhibition space, the Video Archive and a program of international residences
Careof was born in 1987 in Cusano Milanino by Mario Gorni and Zafferina Castoldi with the aim of promoting the artistic research, archiving and preserving of contemporary art materials (portfolios, photographs, videos, books and catalogues) in order to offer the consultation of the acquired heritage to the public.
In 1997, ten years after its birth, Careof consolidated its activity also thanks to the support of the Comune di Milano.
In 2006 Careof Archive was acknowledged by the Historical Archives of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities.
After two years, in 2008, Careof inaugurated its new venue at Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan.
In this occasion – from the collaboration between Careof and Viafarini already began in 1995 – the DOCVA Documentation Centre for Visual Art is born. DOCVA started all the teaching activity working with Academies and Universities.
In 2011 Careof started a new project of residences at Fabbrica del Vapore, the FDV Residency Program that still continues today.
